desertSMART Gardens Challenge – brief round-up

Last week, 15 people got together and put in a vege garden bed at Frances’ house. It was a no-dig garden which required us to fill a walled garden bed with manure and dirt, however that wasn’t just it. The bed was prepared with a lining of corrugated iron and black plastic, to allow drainage. This was then covered with shade cloth and pebbles and rubble was wrapped in shade cloth. Then started the layering, mixing, watering and general soil making with the original dirt, straw and cow manure. It was a fun day and all participants had a great time with people whose name they didn’t even know. It was a fantastic example of people just getting on with the job. We’re looking to do this again and make it a regular thing.

COOLmob Gardens Challenge… Open Day – Saturday March 14

Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob is presenting another FREE workshop as part of the ongoing “Gardens Challenge” project.
This weeks workshop is focused on developing a ‘family friendly’ garden relevant for suburban Alice Springs households. The garden will be transformed into a space idea for children and incorporate some lawn, veggies, fruit trees and native plants. However, the overall emphasis will be how to achieve this by using the least amount of water possible.
Geoff Miers, local gardening guru and manager of Geoff Miers Garden Solutions will be sharing his desert horticultural experience, and answering questions. The particular focus will be on garden planning and how to eliminate unwanted grass – especially couch.
Come along for a cuppa, and share ideas with other interested people…

Summer Opening Hours
There will be no Project Manager in the office until February when our new Project Manager, Robbie Henderson starts in early February. You can still book a water audit by emailing or ringing DKA COOLmob. Milyika is keeping things ticking over on casual basis. Energy audits will not be available again until February. Please talk to Alice Solar City about any energy efficiency queries.
If any matter is urgent, please ring Jimmy Cocking, Arid Lands Environment Centre Co-ordinator, (08) 8952 2497.

Monday December 1st was the inaugural workshop for the Gardens Challenge. We heard about the waterwise garden plans put together by Anne, Dave and Francis. There was a lot of discussion with Peter Yates about the best manures to treat soil with and how to remove couch grass. The Gardens Challenge will really ramp up in 2009 with loads of free, hands on workshops about: eradicating couch, greywater, native plants for bush blocks, raised bed gardens, irrigation and more. Congratulations to Anne, Dave, Francis and the other members of their homes for being selected to be our garden champs.

Re-Thinking Waste in Schools Workshop
Eight teachers from 5 Central Australian schools and 7 environmental experts from Alice Springs all met at the Desert Park today for the Re-Thinking Waste in Schools workshop.
The workshop was run through a wikispace which the teachers will continue to use to collaborate, share and plan both their units of work and the Big Waste Day Out celebration in August 2008. At the same time a group of Top End schools met in Darwin and were using the same wikispace to plan their own units of work and the Darwin Big Waste Day Out. Teachers are planning all sorts of programs to create fun learning opportunities for their students that are purposeful and contextualised in the areas of reducing water, energy, litter and resource use, and increasing recycling and creative ways to deal with our waste.
